Created in a custom-built studio in Banyuls-sur-Mer with producer Basile3, CELLS is an album shaped by frictions and breathing spaces, between intimate memory, desire, and vital energy. Driven by a fertile tension between the cello and its digital transformation, it unfolds a shifting soundscape where organic intensity meets electronic metamorphosis.
Since the early 2010s, Gaspar Claus has been developing a singular, primarily instrumental language at the crossroads of several musical worlds. His contemporary chamber music is deeply influenced by the American minimalist movement and subtly infused with echoes of traditional music from the Mediterranean basin.
The title CELLS refers to “cell” entities that can be both autonomous and connected. For Gaspar Claus, each track is therefore “a musical cell, both autonomous and connected to the others.” The word also deliberately echoes “cello”, the instrument at the source of almost every sound on the album.
The cello sounds have been processed, transformed and sometimes turned into more synthetic, electric or percussive sounds. The electronic elements thus remain organic, their raw material always originating from the cello. Produced by Basile3 and mixed by David Chalmin, the album moves continuously between tension and suspension, desire, intimate memory and vital energy.
From “World of Idols” to “Cupidon”, featuring the voice of Matt Elliott, and the more electronic pulses of “Ecstasy”, CELLS constantly shifts between acoustic sound and digital transformation, memory and metamorphosis. Its ten tracks form a coherent, deeply organic whole, carried by the conviction that music plays a fundamental role in our lives.
