Taken from Rone’s latest album, “Megaptera Novaengliae” returns through a contemporary lens with a new music video and a two-track drop featuring a remix by Nathan Fake.
The video draws on previously unseen footage from Valentin Paoli’s film La Baleine et le Musicien, moving between the surface and the underwater world: a zodiac seen from beneath the water, divers and freedivers, and the striking encounter with a whale and her calf.
Through these images, Rone invites viewers to see the world from the whales’ perspective and feel how they perceive our presence in their underwater environment. The video also pays tribute to the divers and freedivers who accompanied the film’s journey, at the intersection of nature discovery and artistic creation.
Carried by synth layers and a slow, hypnotic pulse, “Megaptera Novaengliae” has an elusive, almost soothing quality. Born from Rone’s time at sea off the coast of Réunion Island, the track captures a moment when music became less a way of understanding whales than a way of listening and observing.
On the remix, Nathan Fake takes the track somewhere more visceral, recalling the raw, trance-infused electronics of his early Border Community releases. His version pushes Rone’s slower pulse forward with distorted synths and an insistent rhythm.
